Moderators have escalated this to MS/Asobo to look into (as well as some issues with launching MSFS 2024) The difference now is that Steam has installed the initial 2GB of files, but when I press Play it launches MSFS and then gets stuck checking for updates so it won't even allow me to intsall the game files !!! I have tried various things, from running as Administrator to unplugging the Ethernet cable to get it to skip the checking stage.. I don't know if it was the solution, but it sure did work for me.
